The Volvo XC40: A Practical First Luxury SUV for Cape Cod

The XC40 is Volvo's smallest and most affordable SUV, built around a gasoline mild-hybrid engine — not to be confused with the EX40, the fully electric model that used to carry the XC40 Recharge name. Its trim lineup, pricing, and compact footprint are built for exactly the kind of narrow village streets and winter roads the Cape throws at a daily driver.

Yes — for a first-time luxury SUV buyer who wants real Volvo engineering and safety credentials without the size or price of an XC60 or XC90, the XC40 is a sensible place to start. It opens at $39,900, carries Volvo's standard City Safety collision-avoidance system on every trim, and tows up to 3,500 lbs regardless of which trim you choose. Its smaller footprint also makes it noticeably easier to park and maneuver on the Cape's older downtown streets than either larger Volvo SUV.

01 · Trims & Pricing

What Is the 2026 Volvo XC40?

Three trims, one gasoline mild-hybrid lineup — and a name that no longer includes an electric version.

The XC40 is a compact luxury SUV built around a turbocharged mild-hybrid engine, offered in three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultra. Core and Plus use the 194-horsepower B4 engine, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available as an option on both; the range-topping Ultra switches to the 247-horsepower B5 engine with all-wheel drive standard. A gloss-black Black Edition appearance package is also available on the Ultra.

Plus$43,900B4 mild hybrid, 194 hpFWD standard, AWD optional
Ultra$51,250B5 mild hybrid, 247 hpAWD standard

Prices are manufacturer-published starting MSRPs before the $1,395 destination charge; they don't reflect current dealer pricing, incentives, or added options.

Not the same vehicle as the EX40

The fully electric version of this body style used to be sold as the XC40 Recharge. Volvo renamed it the EX40 in 2025 to match its newer electric-only naming convention, so today's XC40 name applies only to the gasoline mild-hybrid model described above. If a battery-electric Volvo SUV is what you're actually after, see our EX40 vs. EX30 guide instead.

02 · First-Time Luxury Buyers

Is the XC40 a Good First Luxury SUV?

Two reasons it works as an entry point, and the safety heritage behind the brand.

Entry price
Well below Volvo's three-row SUVs

The XC40 Core starts at $39,900, below both the XC60 and XC90, while still carrying full Volvo engineering, standard safety tech, and the brand's cabin materials — without asking a first-time luxury buyer to commit to three-row size or pricing.

Standard safety
City Safety on every trim

Volvo's City Safety system — camera, radar, and ultrasonic sensors that apply automatic braking for vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and large animals — is standard across every 2026 XC40 trim. Pilot Assist's centering steering support is reserved for the Ultra, but the core collision-avoidance system isn't.

Volvo invented the modern seatbelt, then gave it away

The three-point seatbelt used in nearly every car on the road today was invented by Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959. Volvo released the patent to the rest of the auto industry rather than keep it exclusive — a decision that still shapes how the brand talks about safety, in the XC40 and everywhere else in its lineup.

03 · Driving the XC40 on Cape Cod

Built for Narrow Streets and Salt Air

Compact size and a real cold-weather warranty, not just marketing language.

At 174.8 inches long, the XC40 is noticeably shorter than either the XC60 or XC90, which matters on the narrow, often metered streets around downtown Hyannis, Falmouth, and Provincetown, where a smaller turning footprint and easier parallel parking make daily errands simpler. That smaller footprint doesn't come at the cost of capability: every XC40 is rated to tow up to 3,500 lbs, enough for a light boat or jet-ski trailer at a Cape Cod Bay or Buzzards Bay launch, and the Ultra trim's standard all-wheel drive is built for the Cape's exposed, Nor'easter-prone rural roads in winter.

Corrosion warranty12 yearsUnlimited miles, every current Volvo

Choosing the front-wheel-drive Core or Plus over the standard-AWD Ultra is worth naming honestly: front-wheel drive alone isn't the ideal setup for an exposed Cape Cod winter, which is why all-wheel drive is offered as an option on both trims. Whichever drivetrain you choose, every XC40 carries the same 12-year, unlimited-mile corrosion warranty that protects against the salt air every car on the Cape eventually faces — see our coastal corrosion coverage guide for how that warranty holds up over time.

Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers about the Volvo XC40 for Cape Cod buyers.

Is the Volvo XC40 a good first luxury SUV?
For most first-time luxury SUV buyers, yes. It starts at $39,900, well below the XC60 and XC90, carries Volvo's standard City Safety collision-avoidance system on every trim, and tows up to 3,500 lbs regardless of trim — real Volvo engineering and safety credentials without three-row size or pricing.
What is the difference between the Volvo XC40 and the EX40?
The XC40 is Volvo's gasoline mild-hybrid compact SUV, offered in Core, Plus, and Ultra trims. The EX40 is a separate, fully electric model — it was sold as the XC40 Recharge until Volvo renamed it EX40 in 2025. The two no longer share a name, but they do share the same compact body style.
Does the Volvo XC40 come standard with all-wheel drive?
Only on the Ultra trim. Core and Plus use front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option on both; Ultra switches to the more powerful B5 engine with all-wheel drive standard.
How much can a Volvo XC40 tow?
Every current XC40 trim is rated to tow up to 3,500 lbs, with no trim restriction — enough for a light boat or jet-ski trailer at most Cape Cod Bay or Buzzards Bay launches.
Is the XC40 a good size for driving around Cape Cod's downtown areas?
Yes. At 174.8 inches long, it's noticeably shorter than the XC60 or XC90, which makes parking and maneuvering easier on the narrower streets around downtown Hyannis, Falmouth, and Provincetown, without giving up the 3,500-lb tow rating shared across Volvo's current SUV lineup.
